Otro ícono cultural chino quedó reducido a escombros luego de que el 2 de febrero de 2019, funcionarios gubernamentales del condado de Pingshan, bajo la jurisdicción de la ciudad de Shijiazhuang, en la provincia norteña de Hebei, detonaran y destruyeran una estatua de Guan Yin, la cual se hallaba esculpida en un acantilado y medía 57,9 metros de altura.
Esta estatua de Guan Yin, conocida como “Guan Yin derramando gotas de agua”, era la estatua de la “diosa de la misericordia y la compasión” de pie más alta del mundo entre las talladas en un acantilado.
Desde el año pasado, el Partido Comunista Chino (PCCh) ha utilizado el pretexto de lidiar con la comercialización del budismo para reprimir vigorosamente los lugares religiosos y las estatuas religiosas situadas al aire libre a lo largo de todo el país. En todas las regiones, famosas estatuas situadas al aire libre han sido cubiertas o demolidas.
El 30 de enero, con el objetivo de demoler la estatua de Guan Yin derramando gotas de agua, más de 20 funcionarios, entre los que se incluían líderes gubernamentales provinciales, municipales y de condados, además de oficiales de seguridad pública locales, impartían órdenes en el lugar. Los mismos exigieron que toda el área escénica del Templo de Huang’an fuera acordonada, prohibiéndoles a las personas ingresar o salir de la misma, así como también tomar fotos, y a su vez emitieron una advertencia que decía: la persona que interfiera con las tareas de demolición será arrestada.
La utilización de explosivos para demoler la estatua de Guan Yin fue, según una fuente, una orden directa emitida por el Comité Central del PCCh.
“A lo largo de todo el país, a las personas se les ha prohibido adorar o realizar ofrendas a las estatuas de Buda”, le dijo la fuente a Bitter Winter.
Según un aldeano local, durante cada festival o día festivo, más de 10.000 personas llegaban cada día al lugar para rendir culto o redimir sus votos. Esto es algo que el PCCh no puede tolerar.
“La gente común adora y alaba a Buda, pero no alaba al Partido Comunista. ¿Cómo puede el Partido Comunista sentirse contento con eso?”, afirmó un aldeano local. “Ya que no crees en el Partido Comunista, el Partido Comunista derribará tu estatua de Buda”.
