Los antiguos sabios chinos enseñaron que los cinco elementos -metal, madera, agua, fuego y tierra- componen toda la materia del universo, incluido el cuerpo humano. Trasladando este concepto a la nutrición, los antiguos también decían que los cinco sabores deben estar balanceados y que uno no debe apegarse a ninguno de ellos; que los cinco granos proveen el principal nutriente; que las cinco frutas proporcionan asistencia; que los cinco tipos de ganados proveen beneficios y que los cinco vegetales proveen los suplementos necesarios para el desarrollo del ser humano.
Esto quiere decir que el cuerpo, en circunstancias normales, necesita sustentarse con un balance de nutrientes que no favorezca a ninguna comida en particular. Si uno de los cinco sabores no está balanceado, causará cierta afección. Los cinco sabores mencionados por los ancestros eran conceptos básicos de la ciencia de la nutrición de aquella época. Tales conceptos eran mucho más amplios que los de la ciencia actual.
Por ejemplo, si uno come mucha comida salada, se le bloqueará el pulso, y su apariencia cambiará. Si uno come mucha comida amarga, la piel se atrofia y el cabello se cae. Si uno come comida muy picante, los tendones pueden producir protuberancias, y pueden atrofiarse las manos. Si uno come mucha comida ácida, los músculos se atrofian y los labios palidecen. Y si uno come mucha comida dulce, los huesos duelen, y también se cae el cabello.
La gente de hoy enfatiza la dieta balanceada, pero la comida que consume no tiene realmente un balance. Por ejemplo, la gente de la antigüedad hablaba de los cinco granos: trigo, sorgo, arroz, porotos y mijo. ¿Cuántas personas conocen y saben dónde encontrar hoy en día estos cinco granos?
La ciencia moderna de la nutrición entiende que hay más de 20 elementos nutritivos, entre ellos muchas vitaminas, oligoelementos, proteínas, calcio, fosfatos, etc. En realidad, las composiciones de las diferentes vidas en el Universo son muy complicadas y no es tan simple como lo plantea la ciencia moderna.
La ciencia moderna de la nutrición considera que ciertos síntomas relacionados con afecciones no identificadas son producto de una dieta desequilibrada. Pero los meros suplementos dietarios con ciertos nutrientes como calcio, zinc, etc., no pueden curar estos síntomas.
La gente de la antigüedad creía que el cuerpo humano constituye un universo. Desde una perspectiva macroscópica, podemos entender al cuerpo humano sobre la base del yin yang y los cinco elementos.

Podemos explicar los fenómenos físicos de nuestro cuerpo en base al movimiento del qi, la sangre y los canales de energía, así como por la interacción entre los cinco elementos y el balance del yin y yang. Por eso, los tratamientos antiguos en China no apuntaban a los fenómenos superficiales, sino a los profundos mecanismos del cuerpo humano. Esa es la verdadera ciencia humana.
La ciencia médica moderna reconoce que el cuerpo humano es un sistema muy complejo, pero sólo estudia la superficie y los fenómenos asociados. Su entendimiento del cuerpo humano es discreto y superficial, y sus tratamientos son también muy discretos y superficiales. Ya que ellos apuntan a la superficie, los efectos se ven desde la superficie, por lo que resultan fáciles de aceptar para la gente. Pero no pueden arrancar las raíces que causan las enfermedades.
En la sociedad moderna todo se enfoca en la productividad y la eficiencia. En el área de la agricultura hay muchos cultivos y animales de granja híbridos. Estos generalmente tienen una vida corta y crecen muy rápido. Ambos, cultivos y animales, se producen en masa.
De acuerdo con los conceptos tradicionales, las cosechas y el ganado que crecen de tal forma, seguramente no absorben suficiente esencia del cielo y de la tierra. Si uno analizara sus niveles proteicos y sus niveles de energía, encontrará que son bajos. Entonces, los “cinco sabores” probablemente se encuentren en desequilibrio. Cuando una persona ingiera esos alimentos, también estará fuera del balance de los “cinco sabores”.
Después de años de comer pollos de criadero, al comer un pollo de campo, la gente se da cuenta de que el pollo de campo es más sabroso y nutritivo. Del mismo modo, se nota que el sabor y la consistencia de los cultivos y el ganado producidos industrialmente están totalmente distorsionados respecto de sus versiones naturales. Ni hablar de los productos alterados genéticamente, de los cuales los científicos aún no tienen en claro sus efectos distorsivos en la naturaleza y en el ser humano.
De acuerdo con el principio de “generación e inhibición mutua” (NdR: este principio explica que todo tiene su contraparte: bueno vs. lo malo, blanco vs. negro, salud vs. enfermedad, etc.), con el crecimiento acelerado, otras propiedades, como el valor nutritivo, disminuyen.
El nivel nutritivo y las cualidades generales de la comida que se produce mediante métodos artificiales nunca igualarán a los de la comida producida naturalmente. Esto se nota, por ejemplo, con el ginseng, cuya versiónproducida artificialmente nunca podrá compararse con el natural. Mientras continúe la era de la producción masiva de comida, las diferencias se volverán aun más grandes, y la gente tendrá nuevos y más problemas de salud.
